Travel in Vietnam by train is a safe and comfortable way. The simple rail transport system with a few lines makes your trip easy. Most of the railway stations are located near the city center, which enjoy convenient transport and save a lot of time. In addition, the overnight rides save you the hotel room cost.

Vietnam Train Tickets Booking
Basic FactsIn the total length of 1,955 miles (3,147 kilometers) of Vietnam railway, the 1,660 miles (2,670 kilometers) is the trunk route. There is a 1,072 miles’ (1,726 kilometers) long north-south rail trunk between Hanoi and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Running along the beautiful east coast of the country, the trains (no. SE1 - SE8, TN1, TN2) linking the capital Hanoi in the north and Saigon in the south enable tourists to see Vietnam in a slow but artistic way. SE3 and SE4 enjoy the highest speed, which makes the whole trip within 30 hours. Others would take longer - 30 to 41 hours. Although it is slow and more expensive than the open tour bus, the sleeper makes the trip more comfortable.
Besides, there are some trunk routes in north Vietnam, including sections from Hanoi to Sapa / Lao Cai (no. SP1 - SP4, SP7, SP8, LC1 - LC4), Đong Đang (no. M1, M2, DD3, DD4), Hai Phong (no. HP1、HP2), and Thái Nguyên. In Hanoi, Gia Lam, and Đong Đang Stations, passengers can take international trains to China.

About 'Reunification Express':
Some guidebooks call the railway from Hanoi to Saigon the Reunification Express. Vietnam was divided into two parts and the rail route was cut off in 1956. The country was re-unified in 1975, and the rail route was resumed in Dec, 1976. It re-connected the country from north to south. That’s why people call it the Reunification Express.
Railway StationsMajor railways stations in Vietnam include the Hanoi Gia Lam Station, Hanoi Station, Danang Station, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) Station, Hue Station, and Nha Trang Station.

Train TypesTrains with odd numbers are from Hanoi to Saigon, while those with even numbers are from Saigon to Hanoi. SE1 - SE4 are the best air-conditioned ones. Passengers can choose the soft sleepers, hard sleepers, or soft seats. SE5, SE6, SE19 and SE20 have non-air-conditioned hard seats. Due to the tropical weather, we do not suggest travelers to choose this type. There is no soft sleeper carriage available on the TN1 and TN2.
Ticket TypesThere are generally four types of tickets: soft sleeper (4 berths in a compartment), hard sleeper (6 berths in a compartment), soft seat, and hard seat. The sleeper tickets are recommended and most westerners use this type. The sleeper cabins are spacious and comfortable. Each compartment has a door to separate it with the corridor. The soft sleeper cabins have charging plug, and offer bottled water to passengers besides the hot drinking water.

Tips1. Although most of the local people do not like to travel by rail due to the low speed, the tickets are still hard to buy. There are only a few pairs of trains in operation. Passengers need to book as early as possible, and better through the local agencies.
2. It is suggested to arrive at the station one hour earlier. In the terminal station, passengers can get onboard one hour before the departure time.
3. Due to the special narrow design of the track, it would sway onboard. Hold the cup with hot water tight in your hand in case of injury.
4. Generally the trains run at a low speed, and usually arrive behind schedule. You should prepare for one to three hours’ delay.
